Plymouth is one of the South West's most underrated summer destinations. A historic waterfront city with a working harbour, a spectacular Sound, and direct access to both Devon's beaches and Cornwall's most iconic spots — all from a single base.

The art deco Tinside Lido on Plymouth Hoe is one of England's finest outdoor pools, open through summer with stunning views across Plymouth Sound. Plymouth Hoe itself hosts the British Fireworks Championships each August — one of the best free firework displays in the country. A 15-minute walk from the apartment.
Cornwall is minutes away. Cross the Cremyll Ferry directly from Royal William Yard into Mount Edgcumbe Country Park (Cornwall) — a 5-minute boat ride. Drive over the Tamar Bridge to reach Looe (45 mins), Fowey (1 hr), or the Eden Project (1 hr). Whitsand Bay, one of Devon and Cornwall's finest beaches, is just 30 minutes by car.
Plymouth Sound is an ideal playground in summer. Paddleboard and kayak hire is available from the Barbican waterfront, a 10-minute walk away. RIB speedboat trips run to the Breakwater and around the Sound. Local beaches — Bovisand, Wembury, and Jennycliff — are all within 20 minutes. The sea water temperature is at its best from July onwards.
Dartmoor is 30 minutes from the apartment and extraordinary in summer. Wild swimming at Spitchwick Common on the River Dart is a summer highlight — clear, fast-flowing water in a beautiful moorland setting. Haytor and Hound Tor offer fantastic walks with panoramic views. Dartmoor Zoo is popular with families. The Two Moors Way is accessible for serious walkers.
The Yard is at its best on a warm summer evening. SECO Lounge opens its terrace for waterfront cocktails, the restaurants fill with outdoor diners, and the Georgian courtyards are flooded with light until late. Summer brings pop-up events and outdoor markets. The Column Bakehouse makes exceptional coffee for a morning walk along the promenade before the day begins.

The Cremyll Ferry from Royal William Yard itself crosses to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall (a 5-minute crossing). In summer you can reach popular Cornish beaches like Whitsand Bay in 30 minutes, or Looe in 45 minutes. The Eden Project is about an hour. Plymouth is genuinely the ideal base for exploring both Devon and Cornwall without the Cornwall accommodation premium.
