Royal Navy Accommodation in Plymouth

A private waterfront apartment five minutes from Devonport Naval Base. For families visiting serving personnel, people posted here on courses, and contractors working in the dockyard. From £103 per night — weekly rates on request.

Five Minutes from Devonport

Royal William Yard was built to victual the Royal Navy. It sits on the water between Devonport and Plymouth Hoe, which makes it about a five-minute drive from the base and roughly twenty-five minutes on foot along the waterfront.

That proximity matters if you are here for a homecoming, a ceremony, a course, or a refit. You are close enough that getting to the base is trivial, but far enough that you are staying somewhere pleasant — a Grade I listed dockyard with restaurants, a bakery and the ferry to Cornwall, rather than a bypass hotel.

Who Stays With Us

Families Visiting Personnel

Partners and children visiting someone stationed at Devonport. Sleeps 3 adults plus a baby, so you stay together rather than booking two hotel rooms.

Homecomings and Ceremonies

Ship returns, passing out parades and family days. Flexible self check-in means a late berth or a schedule change is not a problem.

Personnel on Courses

Posted to Plymouth for a few weeks rather than a few days. Weekly rates on request, and a full kitchen so you are not living on takeaways.

Dockyard Contractors

Babcock and refit contractors working at Devonport. Parking on site, fast WiFi, workspace, VAT invoices and bank transfer accepted.

MOD and Defence Visitors

Civilian staff and suppliers visiting the base or the marine sector at Oceansgate, which is adjacent to Royal William Yard.

Winter and Off-Season Stays

Naval Plymouth does not have a season. When the holiday trade quietens down we have more availability and more flexibility on longer bookings.

Getting to the Base and Around Plymouth

  • HMNB Devonport — 5 minutes by car, around 25 minutes walking along the waterfront
  • Oceansgate Marine Enterprise Zone — adjacent to Royal William Yard
  • Plymouth city centre — 2 miles, 10 minutes by car
  • Plymouth railway station — 10 minutes by car, direct to London Paddington in around 4 hours
  • Derriford Hospital — 20 minutes by car
  • Cremyll ferry to Mount Edgcumbe — a short walk from the apartment

Parking is available at Royal William Yard and full instructions come with your booking confirmation. If you are arriving with a van or larger vehicle, tell us in advance and we will advise on the best option.

Longer Stays and Postings

A hotel works for two nights. For anything longer — a course, a refit, a posting — a self-catering apartment is both cheaper and considerably more civilised. You get a kitchen, a living room, a washing machine and somewhere to work.

  • Standard nightly rate — from £103/night
  • Weekly rate — discounted for stays of 7 nights or more, quoted on request
  • Monthly rate — available on application for longer postings and refit periods

Email info@welcomeretreats.co.uk with your dates and we will come back with a quote. VAT invoices are provided on request and we accept bank transfer as well as card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Five minutes by car, or around 25 minutes on foot along the waterfront. Royal William Yard sits between Devonport and Plymouth Hoe, so you are close to the base without staying inside it. There is parking at the Yard, and taxis into Devonport are short and inexpensive.

Regularly. Families visiting for a homecoming, a passing out parade, a ceremony or simply a weekend with someone stationed at Devonport make up a good share of our off-season bookings. The apartment sleeps 3 adults plus a baby, so it works for a partner and children rather than splitting across hotel rooms.

Yes. Check-in is self-service using a key safe, so there is no reception to reach before a certain hour. If a ship berths late or a shift overruns you can arrive when you arrive. Let us know roughly what to expect and we will make sure everything is ready.

Yes. For stays of 7 nights or more we offer discounted weekly rates, and monthly rates are available on application for longer postings and refit periods. Email info@welcomeretreats.co.uk with your dates and we will quote. This suits personnel on courses, contractors working in the dockyard, and anyone here for a defined period rather than a holiday.

It is set up for it. Fast WiFi, a proper workspace, a full kitchen so you are not eating out every night, and a quiet residential setting rather than a busy seafront. Royal William Yard is a working part of Plymouth, not a tourist strip, which makes a difference when you are here to work.

Yes. Tell us when booking that you need one and we will issue a full VAT invoice with our business details. We also accept bank transfer as well as card, which is often easier for contractor and company bookings.
