Accommodation at Royal William Yard

Stay in Plymouth's most iconic waterfront destination. A luxury self-catering apartment in a beautifully restored Grade I listed naval building.

A Truly Unique Place to Stay in Plymouth

Royal William Yard isn't just accommodation — it's an experience. This magnificent complex of honey-coloured limestone buildings was built between 1825 and 1831 to supply food and drink to the entire Royal Navy. Today, it's been sensitively restored into one of the most desirable waterfront communities in the South West of England.

Our apartment at Welcome Retreats sits within this historic setting, offering you the chance to stay somewhere genuinely extraordinary. The building's original character — thick stone walls, generous proportions, a sense of solidity and permanence — combines with modern comforts to create a stay unlike anything a standard hotel can offer.

Step outside and you're immediately on the waterfront. Plymouth Sound stretches before you, with views across to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park on the Cornwall side. Fishing boats and sailing yachts bob in the marina. In summer, you might spot dolphins playing in the Sound.

What Makes Royal William Yard Special

The Yard has become Plymouth's premier dining and lifestyle destination. Within a few minutes' walk of your apartment door, you'll find:

  • Le Bistrot Pierre — authentic French brasserie with waterfront terrace
  • SECO Lounge — relaxed drinks and dining with a vibrant atmosphere
  • Column Bakehouse — award-winning sourdough bakery and cafe, perfect for morning coffee
  • Wildwood — relaxed Italian dining with harbour views
  • Wagamama — Asian-inspired dishes in a stunning converted building
  • The Dock — artisan pizzas and cocktails at nearby King Point Marina

Beyond dining, the Yard hosts regular events throughout the year — from open-air cinema screenings and food festivals to fireworks displays and Christmas markets. There's an art gallery, independent boutiques, and a real sense of community that makes it feel special.

Your Base for Exploring Plymouth and Beyond

Royal William Yard's location is hard to beat. You're far enough from the city centre to feel peaceful, yet close enough to walk to Plymouth's main attractions:

  • Plymouth Hoe — the famous seafront promenade with Smeaton's Tower lighthouse, a 25-minute waterfront walk
  • The Barbican — Plymouth's historic harbour quarter with cobbled streets, the Mayflower Steps, and the Gin Distillery
  • National Marine Aquarium — the UK's largest aquarium, ideal for families
  • The Box — Plymouth's award-winning museum and art gallery (free entry)
  • Dartmoor National Park — dramatic moorland landscapes just 30 minutes by car
  • Mount Edgcumbe — beautiful country park across the Sound, reachable by foot ferry

The History of Royal William Yard

Named after King William IV, the Yard was designed by the renowned engineer Sir John Rennie and took six years to build. At its peak, it produced enough food to feed 30,000 sailors across the Royal Navy fleet — an astonishing feat of Georgian engineering and logistics.

The buildings themselves are architectural marvels. The massive stone facades, the grand entrance gate (modelled on a Roman triumphal arch), and the ingenious internal layout all speak to an era when Britain ruled the waves and Plymouth was at the heart of that maritime power.

After the Navy departed in the 1990s, the Yard was carefully restored and reopened as a mixed-use development. The restoration respected the original architecture while creating beautiful modern living spaces — our apartment being one of them.
